Railfanning West Chicago IL 3-15-09

West Chicago has always been an attractive place to watch and photograph trains. The busy, triple-tracked Union Pacific Geneva Subdivision intersects the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern mainline here, at "JB" Tower, still manned 24 hours a day by EJ&E operators. Even in this challenging economy, and despite my arriving on a Sunday morning, West Chicago did not disappoint, providing a steady stream of trains on both roads right up through the cloudless day's last light. The recent addition of CN's through trains operating over the EJ&E just made it better. On this particular visit, I photographed 16 UP freight trains, six separate movements on the EJ&E (involving 4 different carriers), and several (although not all) Metra commuter trains. I certainly found it to be an enjoyable place to expend a roll of Fuji Velvia film! I've posted the results here to share with all.

Next, a short westbound stack train with a sizable cut of KI-Line containers moved through "JB" interlocking. This is the distributed power unit on the rear end of the train.

Metra trains operating in "push" mode aren't all that photogenic, but venerable "JB" Tower is.

An eastbound coal train with UP system equipment crosses the EJ&E at "JB." The dingy lead locomotive has obviously seen its share of coal train service.

An eastbound approaches "JB." Although all three UP mains are reverse-signaled through West Chicago, most trains still tend to follow the historical "left-handed" opperating pattern of the former C&NW.

This light EJ&E power, heading for Spaulding to retrieve a coal train off CP, caught me off guard with its quick approach.
