Hi-Railing Conrail in Detroit
These photos were taken during a hi-rail tour over various Conrail routes in and around Detroit MI. The trip started at the southern limit of Conrail territory at MP 20 on the Detroit Line, and commenced north to CP "YD." From that point, the Junction Yard Secondary Track was used through Ecorse Jct. northward to CP "Schaefer," where the east leg of the wye connecting the Michigan Line was traversed. Then the Michigan Line was utilized eastward through CP "Lou" to CP "West Detroit." The vehicles were then taken off the rail and driven back to CP "YD" to be placed back on the Detroit Line there. The final portion of the trip was then north from "YD" through Delray, CP "Waterman," CP "Vinewood" and CP "North Yard" onto CR's Sterling Secondary Track toward the Sterling Yard facility in Sterling Heights MI. The hi-rail inspection continued north on the Sterling Secondary and Utica Industrial Track to the end of track north of Utica, at 22 Mile Road (MP 26.2). Although this former NYC route once extended to Saginaw, Bay City, and the tip of Michigan's Lower Peninsula at Mackinaw City, it has been abandoned north of the small yard (Packard) used to serve a now closed Ford plant for many years.
